The common rat is considered a pest because of its adverse effects upon human populations. The most important of these is the ability to transmit diseases to man and livestock as well as the economic damage it causes to foodstuffs and structures.
Rat infestation in a building poses a risk as they are capable of gnawing through pipes and electrical wires, and can also damage the actual building and drainage systems.
Danger signs of a rat problem
- Common Rat droppings are on average 12mm (1/2 inch) long, and are typically described as ‘spindle shaped’; that is, tapering to a point at one or both ends.
- House mouse droppings are much smaller, 3-7mm in length
- Common rats produce about 40 droppings each day and house mice about 80
- Indoor Smears – grease marks from the rodent’s body as they repeatedly brush up against objects. Outdoors the runs can appear as continuous depressions in grass or eventually as well- worn pathways of bare trampled earth.
- Nesting material — shredded insulation, paper, cardboard, plastics, etc.
Potential harm from rats and rodents
- Rodents spread disease such as – Weils disease (leptospiral jaundice), Salmonellosis, rat bite fever, Lymphocytic choriomeningitits and murine typus.
- Damage to stock and buildings. Rodent’s sharp teeth can gnaw through cables, plastic, wooden doors and even mild steel.
- Contamination of foodstuffs and goods. Filth – droppings, hairs and urine found in food stuffs. The cost of cleaning and repackaging commodities.
Threats from rats and rodents
- Legal — failure to comply with legislation, including Health and Safety at Work etc. Act (1974) and Food Safety Act (1990).
- Damage — to goods, foodstuffs and your health and hygiene reputation. Any Pest Control issues will have a negative effect on your restaurant food hygiene rating.
- Environmental Heath Cost — can be considerable. Temporary business closure may be necessary.
- Bad press and media coverage
- Fire risk and structural damage leading to expensive repairs bills.
